On Monday (18/11), Minister Alexandre Silveira signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) and Argentina to enable the export of Argentine natural gas to Brazil. The act creates a bilateral working group to identify the necessary measures to make the supply of Argentine natural gas viable, in particular Gas de Vaca Muerta.
The measures include a study of the economic viability of the logistics routes, taking into account the possible expansion of the existing infrastructure of the two countries, through which it is estimated that it will be possible to move 2 million cubic meters per day in the short term, increasing over the next 3 years to 10 million, until reaching 30 million in 2030.
Silveira highlighted the importance of the act. "This is an important delivery of the Gas for Employment program, which we created with the aim of increasing the supply of natural gas and promoting the reindustrialization of the country. By importing gas from Vaca Muerta, we are strengthening the development of the fertilizer, glass, ceramics, petrochemical and many other industries that bring economic development to Brazil. We will have more gas, and with it more jobs, income and wealth for Brazilians," he said.
The document indicates that the group should seek to make use of the infrastructure already in place in both countries, allowing Argentine gas to be exported in the shortest possible time and at the lowest possible cost. To this end, the group will have to identify ways to make the design and construction of the infrastructure needed to interconnect the existing gas pipelines in each country feasible.
The work agenda for the studies includes priorities such as infrastructure, transportation and interconnection between the countries and types of operations. The memorandum is valid for 18 months, which can be extended. At the end of this period, an activity report will be presented.
