Brazilian ceramic tile industry innovates with retail waste management project

Ceramics of Brazil
November 2024

In the first half of 2024, Anfacer, in partnership with the consultancy Yattó, implemented the Waste Management Pilot Project. The initiative created efficient logistics for the correct disposal of ceramic waste generated during retail handling and storage. As well as avoiding landfill, the waste was recycled and turned into sand.

Sustainability results

Already in its first phase, the project has generated significant impacts. In six months, a total of 42,170 kg of ceramic waste was recycled, the equivalent of more than 5,000 90x90cm tiles. These figures correspond to the implementation of the process in two companies:

  • Leroy Merlin: 14,010 kg of recycled material in 6 collections;
  • Telhanorte: 28,160 kg of recycled material in 10 collections.

Turning waste into resources

Each 20 kg bag of recycled sand contains around 1 kg of recycled ceramic tiles, a clear demonstration of how waste can be converted into new materials for the construction industry.

The success of this first phase shows that efficient waste management can generate benefits throughout the production chain.

Anderson Vieira, Anfacer's Sustainability and Quality consultant , believes that the actions developed in this project make it possible to develop a circular economy in building materials stores. The aim now is to expand the project to other stores.

He also highlights Anfacer's role in establishing strategic partnerships to promote environmentally conscious actions in the Brazilian ceramics sector.

‍"The project attests to the commitment of the Anfacer + Sustainable initiative to promote actions in which sustainability and respect for the environment are part of the business strategy of organizations and other agents that are part of the construction chain," he concludes.
