Anfacer (National Association of Manufacturers of Ceramics for Tiles, Sanitary Ware and Congeners) expresses serious concern about the tariffs imposed by the US government and reinforces that there is no economic fact that justifies 50% tariffs on Brazilian products.
The decision, taken unilaterally and scheduled to come into force on August 1, represents a worrying shake-up in trade relations between the two countries and could have profound economic impacts, especially for strategic sectors such as ceramic tiles, which have the United States as one of their main export destinations.
The abrupt increase in tariffs jeopardizes the competitiveness of Brazilian companies in relation to other countries that manufacture ceramic tiles, and could have an impact on the sustainability of businesses, investments and, consequently, on the lives of around 50,000 workers that the ceramics sector employs directly.
It is important to note that the United States has no disadvantages in its relations with Brazil, but has maintained a trade surplus for over 15 years, reaching US$256.9 billion in goods and services in the last decade alone. Another relevant point is that the measure could also have negative effects for the United States, since the bilateral Brazil-US relationship is characterized by productive complementarity, with a strong exchange of productive inputs.
Faced with this scenario, Anfacer continues to follow the debates and decisions with the Brazilian authorities and reinforces its commitment to defending the best solutions and alternatives for preserving Brazil's place in the American market. As an organization, it believes that the diplomatic route is fundamental to guaranteeing the reliability and predictability of the bilateral relationship between Brazil and the USA, given the country's great importance in the national economy.
