September 2025

In 2024, world production of ceramic tiles fell by 6.2%, while consumption fell by 6.8%. World import and export flows also fell, by 2.5% compared to 2023.

The study confirms the continuation of the global downturn in the ceramics sector, marked by falls in production, consumption and international trade, with Asia leading the losses and Turkey emerging as a positive exception.

Global Ceramic Tiles Market Insights(2024)

A summary of the main highlights

Global coatings production falls below 15 billion m²

Overall, the global ceramics industry and market continued to face a shrinking scenario in 2024, continuing the trends seen in 2022-2023. The economic slowdown and international geopolitical tensions reduced global demand for tiles, resulting in a further contraction in production and world trade volumes, with percentage drops slightly worse than in 2023.

World production fell to 14.95 billion m² in 2024, down 6.2% from 15.93 billion m² in 2023. Although almost all regions recorded a drop, most of the contraction(987 million m²) occurred in Asia and North Africa.

Asia: down 6.5%, from 11.6 to 10.9 billion m², equivalent to 72.8% of global production.

  • China: shrinkage of 820 million m².
  • Vietnam: recovery of more than 100 million m².

Europe: production of 1.615 million m²(10.9% of the world total).

  • European Union: modest growth of 1.4% (from 1.039 to 1.054 billion m²), still far from compensating for the 18% drop in 2023.
  • Non-EU Europe: down to 561 million m² (-8.8%), largely due to lower production in Turkey.

‍Americas: shrinkage to 1.428 million m².

  • North America: 6% drop, from 349 to 328 million m².
  • Central and South America: down 2.1% to 1.1 billion m².

Africa: first drop after more than a decade of growth, from 1.178 to 1.025 million m² (-13%).

  • Causes: strong reduction in Egypt and, to a lesser extent, in Algeria.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa (south of the Sahara Desert): maintained 2023 levels.

‍International trade fell to 2.67 billion sqm

In 2024, world exports also fell for the third consecutive year, by 2.5% (similar to the -2.4% drop in 2023).

A total of 2.67 billion m² of ceramic tiles were exported, 69 million m² less than the previous year. This reduction is almost entirely due to Asia (from 1.539 to 1.472 billion m²; -4.3%), i.e. mainly China and India.

In contrast, exports from the other regions remained practically stable:
